چکیده

Earlier Views Before the introduction of electroconvulsive therapy it was a generally accepted view that a depressive illness which was accompanied by symptoms of depersonalization was likely to run a long course. In recent years, however, opinions on the prognostic significance of depersonalization in depressive illness have been more divided. Mayer-Gross, Slater, and Roth (1954) stated that the presence of depersonalization indicated a more prolonged illness, and Lewis (1956) continued to take this view which he had expressed much earlier (Lewis, 1936). Ackner (1954) found that, in contrast to other depersonalization syndromes, the depressive depersonalization syndrome often responded favourably to electroconvulsive therapy (E.C.T.). Sargant and Slater (1954) expressed the opinion that although the depression may be cleared up by E.C.T., the depersonalization often remains. More recently, Roth (1959) has claimed that in the presence of depersonalization E.C.T. is contraindicated in a depressive illness.

Dose-Response Relationship of Clinical Effi-cacy and Side Effects of Electroconvulsive Therapy

Background: The electrical dose selected for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) must have an acceptable efficacy and no or minimal cognitive side-effects. We evaluated the clinical efficacy and cognitive side-effects of ECT in relation to the stimulus dose administered. Method: This study assessed 71 depressed patients who were treated with bilateral ECT. For evaluation of depressive and cognitive...

Ameliorative activity of co-administration of ketamine and ECT on depression like behaviors in depressed rats

Background and Objective: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the end choice treatment for patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Regarding researches that show NMDA receptor inactivation could yield the same results as anti-depressant drugs, however, the present study examined co-administration of ECT and ketamine (as NMDA antagonist) on depressed rat behaviors.   Materials and Methods...

The effect of ketamine versus thiopental sodium on hemodynamic profile and seizure duration during electroconvulsive therapy in patients with major depressive disorder: A randomized cross-over clinical trial

Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment in major depressive disorder (MDD). Earlier studies suggest that ketamine has antidepressive effects and prolongs seizure duration in favor of therapeutic efficacy of ECT. A great concern with the use of ketamine is its possible adverse hemodynamic effects during ECT. This study was conducted to compare the hemodynamic effect...
